Honorable Mention

Fresh Paint won an Honorable Mention at the 2006 Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Photography Exhibition in Manitou Springs, Colorado - essentially a top seven finish out of 387 submitted images. I am still a bit shocked about it. I've only ever submitted to four shows. Of those four shows, I have gotten work into three. Of those three, I have ribboned in two. As an amateur with nothing more than a 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix - hardly professional grade equipment - I can't help but feel a bit like an imposter. The lesson here is that the quality of the cameral matters less than the eye behind it. This, however, does not keep me from lusting over a Canon Digital Rebel XT, plus telephoto and macro lenses and diffusers and all that fancy swag.

If you're wondering how I managed to take my own photo like this in the middle of a gallery, well, I didn't. I usually have a rule that in order to get posted as a 50 Days photo, I have to take it myself. Busting out the tripod and setting the camera's timer is just fine. Arms-length portraits certainly qualify. But as soon as I hand my camera over to someone else to push the shiny silver button on my behalf, it's no longer my photo. I am breaking that rule because it's a special occasion. I set it up, and my Dad pushed the shiny button for this shot of me next to my prize-winning photo.
