One All-Consuming Story

One of my Saturday rituals is to take a book into the city to a café, where I proceed to read, sip a cinnamon-hibiscus tea, and eat the best damn chocolate chip cookie I have ever tasted. I make fabulous chocolate chip cookies myself, so discovering a cookie better than mine was somewhat crushing at first.. but now if I miss that cookie for more than two weeks, I find myself contriving excuses to wind up downtown.

The black shape in the background is a seven foot tall chair back. This particular table and chairs are unique within the café, and it's my favorite spot to sit. Despite the lack of seat cushions, they're also the most comfortable chairs in the joint. I think of them as the Alice in Wonderland chairs. The rest of the seating is mostly comprised of looted church pews - and if you're Catholic like me, you know precisely how uncomfortable you were sitting on those for an hour every Sunday.

The book in the photo is my current read: Salamander by Thomas Wharton.
