Mo's Birthday: Mexican Karaoke
|
One would not think that Mexican food and karaoke, a Japanese export, would go together, but the seemingly odd pairing works because both are so campy to begin with. Tonight was my friend Monica's birthday party. This is her singing Santeria. I bought myself a Smirnof Ice and sang for the party. These events are notable because (a) I very rarely drink and (b) I had never before participated in any karaoke, unless you include the "You Sing It" recording studio at Six Flags when I was 13. Back then I did Black Velvet, which tonight was completely mauled by some young indie hipster whose coat I was admiring. Several people expressed surprise to discover that I actually can sing quite well. What most of my friends here don't know is that I have a background in musical theatre, although I'm quite rusty. It's always just been Rogers & Hammerstein instead of Fiona Apple. No one came forward offering me a recording deal after my performance, so I guess I'm going back to the bank on Monday.
